Script Analysis
Like Dreaming, Backwards

Like Dreaming, Backwards is a play about a girl who has depression and committed suicide. Through the play we can seewhat happens before, during and after the night that she killed herself. The play is not in chronological order and jumps between past, present, and future. In the past, we can see that she discoversthat she cannot be happy anymore. In the present, we discover that she has guilt that comes from the past and they are materializing in people from her past. In the future, we can see the reaction of thepeople who had contact with her the night that she died. One of those persons is Natalie, the friend of the girl who committed suicide.
The Givens
In the only scene where Natalie appears,she is by herself going through the fact that her best friend killed herself. She is describing the actions that happened that night, and it helps to discover the whole personality of the maincharacter. This scene comes because in the play there are other characters who are also going through the actions that happened that night, and leads them to the same feelings and experience. Natalie, throughher scene, discovers that she didn’t really know her friend, because her friend had problems that she didn’t talk about with Natalie. This scene doesn’t have a specific location, but I think it is inNatalie’s room, and it happens one week after Natalie’s friend kills herself. Natalie and her friend live in a modern time. Suicide is not a taboo subject anymore in this era, but it’s so hard forher talk about what she could or couldn’t do for her friend.
Scene Structure
In this scene, Natalie is trying to figure out if she could have done something for her friend or if shecould have prevented it from happening, and in the whole play everybody is wondering the same. Meanwhile, the main character is wondering why she is not happy, and why she would like to kill herself....
