SEASONS AND CELEBRATIONS

Festivals old and new, this first chapter is about the different old festivals, like Valentine´s Day, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day… People usually meet their family and have a nice meal. They also give presents or chocolate and if the person you want to give a surprise is far away you send a card with a common sentence: “thinking of you across the miles”.

Secondchapter, The Year Begins. It stars with New Year’s Eve and how is celebrated in different cities. In New York for example they meet on Times Square and in London they go to Trafalgar Square. Most of them stand in a Circle, hold their hands and sing the song called Auld Lang Syne. In Scotland New Year’s Eve is named as Hogmany and exist a tradition called: first-footing. Other places like Edinburgand Scottish cities have house parties and street parties, for dancing, drinking and see fireworks.

Most people make a New Year’s Resolution; they decided to do something different because they want to be a better person. For example: “I’m going to stop smoking”.

A few weeks later is Valentine’s Day, in which people in love send cards, buy presents, roses and chocolates. Most couples likego to restaurants and some people think is a good day to marry.

The third chapter is about National Days, most countries have a day that is special to them. For countries like England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland the national day is the day that belongs to their patron saint. The first of these four national days is:

-Saint David’s Day (the patron saint of Wales) 1st March, Welsh love musicand singing, so there are many concerts on this day.

- On 17th March is Saint Patrick’s Day, a big day in Ireland. On this day there are parades, church services and festivals. It is very common wear green clothes.

-Next is Saint George, is the patron saint of England and is the 23rd of April.

-and the last one is Saint Andrew, is the patron saint of Scotland and Saint Andrew’s Day is the30th November. Scottish people celebrate it with concerts and ceilidhs.

There are lots of other celebrations that I’m not going to mention.

The chapter four is called Lent and Easter; it is about the most important festival in the church year. Lent is the forty days before Easter and they begin on Ash Wednesday, and the day before Ash Wednesday is Pancake Day. British people usually eatpancakes with lemon juice and sugar. Easter is always between 22nd March and 25th April.

Eggs are very important part of Easter because they mean spring and new life. People give chocolate Easter eggs as presents. And some women and children decorate hats, called Easter bonnets.

Families and food, chapter fifth. It is about Mother’s and Father’s Day, days in which children try to do things tosay “thank you”. They give them breakfast in bed, give them presents, take them for a meal…

1st April is called All Fool’s Day, in many countries it became a day to play jokes on people and laugh at them.

Chapter six, Summer celebrations. It is about summer. It is said that the longest day of the year is called summer solstice. Summer solstice is a time of sun, light, food, love, and hotweather. People came from all over England to Stonehenge and Avebury on 21st June to celebrate.

Many men and women marry in June, and the holiday that people take after they marry is called the honeymoon.

Also, speak about 4th July 1776 (seventeen seventy-six), the Declaration of Independence. The British and Americans fought each other but at the end the Americans won. So in 1783 the UnitedStates of America was born. Independence Day is a day of celebration; many families have a barbecue, eat and play games. You can find American flag flies everywhere.

Chapter seven, Fires and fireworks. It is about 31st October, Halloween’s Day. People usually get dressed as witches and ghost and decorate and put pumpkins outside their houses, which means keep the bad spirits away. They play...
