The Roman Republic
Rome's early history is shrouded in legend. According to Roman tradition, the city was founded by the twins Romulus and Remus on 21 April753 B.C.. Rome was built on seven rolling hills at a curve on the tiber river. The earliest settlers on the italian peninsula arrived in the prehistoric time. From about 1000 to 500 B.C. three groupsinhabited the region and eventually battle for control. They wre latins, greeks, and the Etruscans. The Etrsuscans wre native to nothern Italy. They were skilled metalworkers and engineers. TheEtrsuscans strongly influenced the development of Roman adopted their aphabet. They also influenced rome architecture, especially the use of the arch. Around 600 B.C. an Etruscan became king of rome. Thelast king of rome was Tarquin the Proud. A hasrh tyrant, he was driven from the power. The romasn declared they would never again be ruled by a king. Instead they establish a republic; a republic is aform of goverment in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders. In rome citizenship with voting rightwas granted only to free born male citizens. In the republic,different groups of romans struggled the power. One group was the patricians (rich) and the other one was the plebeians(poor or normal people). The particians inherited their power and social status.They claimed that their ancestry gave them the authority to make laws for rome. The plebeians were the ones with the right to vote, however they were barred by law from holding most important govermentposition. In time rome leaders allowed the plebeians to have tribunes. Tribunes protected the rights of the plebeians from unfair acts of patricans officials.An important victory for the plebeians werethe twelves tables. they wre the romasn laws.
