In the past 80+ years of existence LAN has always strived to be one of the best at what it does. Initially, the freight transport company’s objective was to become one of the top 10 cargo airlines.However, as soon as LAN was able to accomplish that, the company quickly revised its mission to become not one of the top 10, but rather one of the top 5, best air cargo transportation companies in theworld.

To be able to accomplish this new mission, the company has focused on the logistics/operations end of the business. It has divided this sector into three components with the first beingcargo handling. The first segment encompasses the loading of the truck, storage if needed, as well as documentation and the handling of warehouses among other factors. The second segment is slightlydifferent. It involves getting the cargo from the ground to the plane. And finally, the last segment focuses on flight operations such as fueling of the cargo plane.

With over 800 thousand tons ofcargo transported annually, LAN has been profitable because of its adequate usage of assets and its supply chain network. Currently, LAN flies cargo with planes that have passengers. Annually, LANflies 17.3 million passengers. The remaining cargo that requires transport is then sent through the cargo network. Because LAN airplanes fly longer hours and also fly more cargo, the freight transportcompany has seen an increase in financial gains. Its regional positioning has also been a successful strategic initiative. This has resulted in the creation of the following subsidiaries: LAN Cargo, MASAir in Mexico, ABSA in Brazil, and Linea Aerea Carguera de Colombia in Colombia.

Logistically, the company has set the following three priorities: First, LAN is working on improving its handlingin Brazil. Secondly, LAN wants to have the entire network’s operations be consistent no matter what part of the globe operations are initiated. And finally, its seeking to have a singular operations...
