La Historia del Dia de Accion de Gracias
Los peregrinos (Pilgrims) llegaron a Plymouth Rock el 11 de Diciembre de 1620. El primer Invierno fue muy duro para ellos. Pero el siguiente otoño, ellos obtuvieron una buena cosecha de las semillas que ellos plantaron. Decidieroncelebrarlo con una gran cena, incluyendo a los Indios que les habían ayudado a sobrevivir el primer año. Los hombres se fueron a cazar, a conseguir carne para la cena. No se sabe a ciencia cierta si los pavos de la región, fueron parte de la cena, ya que ellos usaban el termino “pavo” para cualquier clase de ave silvestre. Otra clase de alimento que casi siempre tenemos para el Día de Acción deGracias es el pastel de calabazas. Son muy pocas las posibilidades que ese alimento formara parte del menú de la primera celebración de Acción de Gracias. Las reservas de harina se habían usado, así que no había pan o pasteles de ninguna clase. Había suficiente cantidad de calabazas, por que ellas crecían en el campo y ellos las comían cocidas. Tampoco había leche, sidra, papas o mantequilla. No habíavacas para producir leche y la papa recién descubierta, muchos aun creían que era venenosa. La cena incluyó pescado, bayas silvestres, berros, langostas, fruta seca, maíz, almejas, venado y ciruelas.

The Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was very hard. But the next fall they had a good harvest from the seed they had planted. Theydecided to celebrate with a feast, including the Indians who had helped them survive their first year. The men went hunting to get meat for the feast. It is not certain that wild turkey was a part of their feast since they used the term “turkey” for any kind of wild birds. Another food that we almost always have at Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie. It is unlikely that the first Thanksgiving includedthat treat. The supply of flour had been used, so there was no bread or pastries of any kind. Pumpkin was plentiful because it grew here wild and they ate it boiled. There was also no milk, cider, potatoes or butter. There were no cows to produce milk and the newly-discovered potato was still thought by many to be poisonous. The feast did include fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, corn,clams, venison and plums.
