Jonathan Barnes, a twenty-year-old college student in Britain, has been told that he must pay a mobile phone company $ 1,400 (that´s just over 1,500 euros) after thievesstole his phone and made hundreds of calls with it. In the space of just nineteen hours, Jonathan´s phone was used to make 1,385 calls to television quiz shows whichcharge nearly a pound a call. Almost 300 text messages were sent as well.

Jonathan and his father, an Anglican vicar, have protested to Orange, the phone company.Jonathan is quoted as saying, I´m pretty angry with them. Given that these calls were so unusual, why didn´t it trigger an alarm? He added, They were ringing these numbers allday, four or five times a minute.
I was working at Tesco (a major British supermarket chain) for nine os those hours and there are witnesses who will say I was there.Jonathan´s mother said that his usual bill only averaged about 30 or 40 pounds. But Orange says they are not liable and have suggested that Jonathan pay off the money ininstalments. In a letter to Jonathan , the company points out that de had also used his phone to call quiz shows on ten occasions in the past – eight times on a Sundayin May , once in December and once in January. He realised his phone was lost on the morning on the ninth of June, but didn´t call in to cancel the phone until thatevening- a very expensive delay.

And the thief? Well, he failed to get any of the answers right in the quiz shows.
This example shows how vulnerable we all are in ourmodern society. Many people who previously owned four or five credit cards are now so anxious about losing them that have decided to remove this risk by only having one.
