Glossary:
Auditory feedback: Auditory feedback is an aid used by humans to control speech production and singing. It is assumed that auditory feedback, alongside other feedback mechanismssuch as somatosensory feedback and visual feedback, helps to verify whether the current production of a passage of speech or singing is in accord with a person's acoustic-auditoryintention.
Chereme: Cherology and chereme (from Ancient Greek: χείρ "hand") are synonyms of phonology and phoneme previously used in the study of sign languages.
Finger-spelled words:Fingerspelling is the process of spelling out words by using signs that correspond to the letters of the word.
Glyphs: A glyph is an element of writing: an individual mark on a written medium thatcontributes to the meaning of what is written.
Handshape: this refers to the hand configuration which is used in beginning any word production in American Sign Language (ASL).Hard-of-hearing people: People with milder hearing loss may label themselves as "hard of hearing."
Hearing impairment: Hearing impairment is a generic term including both deaf and hard of hearing whichrefers to persons with any type or degree of hearing loss that causes difficulty working in a traditional way.
Iconic: a sign (as a word or graphic symbol) whose form suggests itsmeaning.
Location: this refers to the physical parameters or bodily location where the sign are produced. The general physical parameters for sign language production are approximately fourinches above the head, elbow room as with hands on waist, and about four inches below the belly button or belt buckle.
Palm orientation: this refers to the direction in which the hand is turnedto produce a sign. Palm orientation is the direction of your palm which may include palm up, palm down, palm right, palm left, palm outward (away from you) or palm inward (palm facing you).
