System whose purpose is to drain an originally closed drainage basin, located in a lacustrinearea with low slope and low permeability. In general, it is comprised of three types of hydraulic structures: artificial drains, secondary network and primary network. Artificial drains 1. El GranCanal de Desagüe. Open canal with trapezoidal section which runs from San Lázaro, D.F. to Estado de México. It has a length of 47 km. 2. Deep drainage system. Secondary network It is a compound of sewage pipes which collect residual and rainwater and from houses. It has an estimated length of 9,000 km. Primary network Integrated by diverse hydraulic structures, it is a network which collects both residual and rain water and it is formed by128 collectors, 108 located in Mexico City. The piping diameter ranges between 60 cm to 4 m and an estimated length of 1,375 km. The network has a its disposal 303 pumping plants, 12 storm tanks, 22siphons, 13 regulatory lagoons and a system of 29 damns. Techniques and construction types The deep drainage system was at its beginning constructed using a combination of both traditional and newmining techniques, the latter being, among others, floating wells and tunnelling done with shields compressed air in order to stabilise the excavation.
