DRP systems (DRP I and DRP II) are time-phased models thatinclude demand forecasts, purchase orders, and customer orders for facility. Distribution requirements planning (DRP I) has been defined as “ a system of determining demands for inventory at distribution centers, consolidating the demand information backwards, and acting as input to the production and materials system”. Thedifferences between DRP I and DRP II are as follows:

Distribution resource planning (DRP II)is an extension of distribution requirements planning (DRP I). Distribution requirements planning applies the time –pashed DRP I logic to replenish inventories in multi-echelon warehousing systems.Distribution resource planning extends DRP I to include the planning of key resources in a distribution system-warehouse space, manpower levels, transport capacity (trucks, railcars, etc.) and financial flows.

In DRP II,logistics requirements drive the master Schedule, which in turn drives the bill of materials, which controls material requirements planning. In essence, DRP I and DRP II are outgrowths of MRP I and MRP II, applied to the logistics activities of a firm. Figure 7-8 depicts the DRP II system schematically.
Although not shown in the figure, accurate forecasts are essential ingredients to successfulDRP II system: “A DRP II system translates the forecast of demand for each SKU (stock-keeping unit) at each warehouse and distribution center into a time phased replenishment plan. If the SKU forecasts are not accurate are not accurate, then the plan will not be accurate”.
