SOCIAL NETWORKS
Everyday new invents are being created, but those related to Information Technology (IT), take human kind to a new world. The new electronic devices, such as phone and computers, are getting more sophisticated every day. Now is very common that we meet and make friends through the internet by using a social network webpage. Almost everybody has an account at least in one of thesites. Social networking sites established the way for easier communications to our friends, family, or co-workers. But while Social networking site become places for establishing connections and meeting friends the have also become likely places for identify theft and fraud, furthermore someone pretending to be somebody else can make you believe that he or she is up to some business offer, andtake your money or also harass you online. Social networks have taken the internet world and have influenced the way we live our lives in one way or another. There are two sides of the coin; there are pros and cons of social networking sites.
The communication revolution starts with the internet and WiFi. New cell phones called Smart phones, includes the possibility to upload pictures, chat online and post messages instantly, all we need is an internet connection. The new computers are smaller and the new tablets make the communications really portable. With the new technology the communication has been changed forever. To be in touch with your friends you do not need to make a call anymore, you can text a message, post something on the website, or even upload a picture of what you justdid. The distance is not a problem anymore. You can communicate with people in another city or country like from Mexico to Brazil and for that reason long distance phone calls cost are not an issue anymore. With a simple click on your device you can be in touch with many friends at the same time. A person can even let some other friends know about what they need to do for homework for examplecollege activities that are just for fun. You do not need to take time to make a phone call, stay away in a quiet room.
When you set up an account for a social network site, you can invite friends to be on your friends’ list. All of their friends’ pages become available for you to browse. Their personal information, preferences and interests are available to all the network community. You can findpeople’s favorite music and movies, age, location, and even dating status. If you are more interested in their life, you can simple click in add to friends button. That sends a request out to that person and he or she can accept or decline the invitation. There are many people who may go on dates and even develop a long distance relationship.
In his book David Teten mention “The pull of onlinedating meeting people virtually gives you the chance to do certain things that you simple cannot do in another way in particular”. (Teten 47). You can meet people you would never meet by any other way. You will be able also to meet people who are most compatible with you, because you can choose the people who fit your preferences.
The most popular online networks are:
a) Facebook: is a socialnetwork service and website launched in February 2004. As of January 2011, Facebook has more than 600 million active users. Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics.On the book The Facebook Effect, mention that Facebook “allows anyone who declares themselves to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website”. (Kirkpatrick 85). Facebook is the world´s largest social network.
