SOCIAL STATUS

Social status could be defined as the position or rank of a person or group within the society. It can be determined by the achieved status and theascribed status. Achieved status is when people earn their social status by their own achievements. On the other hand, someone can enjoy a good position or be in a bad positionin the social status system by their ascribed status, I mean, the social status that they inherited. Working gives an example of status that may be either ascribed orachieved, it can be achieved by one by getting knowledge and achieve skills to enjoy into a high position of a job; building a person social identity within the occupation. In thiscase, I consider determinant the three powers of Max Webber, property; power and prestige , which set and let us distinguish the main differences between the social status ofa manager and the social status of an employee. With regards to prestige, he will enjoy a good position in the social status system. He will also have the power to make hisown decision within his company, with the capacity to forget about the desires of others. The manager will have power over others and will be able to use that power to his ownbenefit. In terms of property, a manager will have important material possessions and life chances. In the case of the employees, I guess there are some differences betweenwhite-collar or blue-collar workers. Blue-collar workers will be who have the minimum power, prestige and property. White-collar workers won’t have the capacity that themanager has, but their conditions will be better than blue-collar ones. In the company they won´t have neither power nor prestige and they will be dependant of the manager.
