THE PERSIAN GULF
Gulf Location: One of themost critical bodies of water is positioned in the heart of the Middle East. Located in southwestern Asia, it separates the Arabian Peninsula from Iran (formerly called Persia). It connects with theGulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea through the Strait of Hormuz, which are 48 to 96Km wide. Its coastal areas are the world´s largest single source of crude oil. Therefore powerful naval forces fromseveral countries remain in its water to protect the flow of oil to the rest of the world, especially considering that it supplies most of the world´s energy needs.
The length is 1000Km, and the maximumwidth is 370Km. To the south, the coast line is flat, while the coast on the Iranian side is mountainous. The temperatures are high, and the salt level is as high as 40%, which results from anevaporation higher than the supply of fresh water. The main fresh water source is from Iraq, through the Shatt al-Arab, the confluence of the rivers Euphrates, Tigris and Karun.
The Persian Gulf was thefocus of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War, in which each side attacked the other´s oil tankers. In 1991, the Persian Gulf again was the background for what was called the “Persian Gulf War” or the “Gulf War”when Iraq invaded Kuwait and was subsequently pushed back, despite the fact that this conflict was primarily a land conflict.
There have been serious incidents that have affected the environment ofthe gulf in recent years. While oil spills from the heavy traffic of oil tankers over years have been serious enough, oil spills from 1983, during the Iran-Iraq War, and in 1991, during the Gulf War,Have been catastrophic.
