2010 SEASON REVIEW

ON TOP OF THE WORLD!

AT THE END OF THE 2009 SEASON, RED BULL RACING’S TEAM MEMBERS WEREENTITLED TO LOOK BACK ON THE YEAR WITH GREAT PRIDE.
Not only had the team scored its first win in China thanks to Sebastian Vettel, but it had also notched its first 1-2, at the same race, witnessed Mark Webber take his maiden win in Germany and scored four more wins to secure second place in the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships. A pretty good haul by anyone’s standards. Formula One standards, though, are not just anyone’s and while the pride in 2009 was justifiable, those two words, ‘second place’, lingered. There could only be one goal for 2010 and that was to take the final step and claim F1’s ultimate prizes – championship titles. Realising that dream, however, depended on the machinery in hand and the annals of F1 are littered with tales of teams who have gone to the year’s first testonly to see the promise of a previous season extinguished by a wrong engineering turn during the winter.

2010 SEASON REVIEW

No such problems, however, befell the RB6 penned by Adrian Newey and his design department. Almost from the off, RB6, a subtle evolution of the previous season’s car, proved itself to be among the most competitive on the grid and pole position at the openingrounds in Bahrain and Australia confirmed the status. But it was at the third round in Malaysia that the team finally showed how it could dominate, Sebastian Vettel taking pole and then he and team-mate Mark Webber going on to take the first of four 1-2 finishes of the year. It was the shape of things to come. Mark Webber took his career tally of Grand Prix wins to four with spectacular victories inSpain and Monaco. Vettel added an outstanding victory at the European Grand Prix in Valencia and Webber scored again at Silverstone to take a third win of the season. The Australian driver then landed an impressive victory in Hungary, converting a risky strategy into victory by pounding out a succession of qualifying-pace laps to vault himself into an unassailable lead after early complications.

2010 SEASON REVIEW

His young team-mate, though, was putting in equally impressive performances. In Japan, Vettel was in imperious form, landing pole position and storming to his third win of the year. Webber backed him up for the team’s third1-2 finish. That result was enough to give Red Bull Racing a commanding lead in the Constructors’ Championship and the first part of a remarkabledouble was landed at the season’s penultimate round in Brazil – Vettel and Webber blasting to 1-2 finish number four to seal the team title in the finest possible style. The celebrations would have been long and loud, but for the small matter of the season’s final round, just a week later in Abu Dhabi. The mathematical permutations of just how the Drivers’ crown could be won and by whom were...
