La Sociología es una ciencia social relativamente nueva, que apareció a mediados del siglo XIX. Fue Auguste Comte quién acuñó eltérmino en 1838 en su Curso de Filosofía positiva. Pero no fue hasta mediados del siglo XIX que se consolidó con una ciencia autónoma. A partir de mediados del siglo XX ya se puede hablar de varias escuelas o corrientes más o menos dominantes. En la actualidad existe una gran diversidad de autores y perspectivas que enriquecen a la sociología, así como esfuerzos para integrar las diversas corrientes.Si bien Auguste Comte es llamado "padre de la sociología", los estudios de carácter sociológico se habían desarrollado mucho antes de que Comte acuñara el término o incluso de que se delimitara su propio campo de estudio.
