She was brave for writing the letter to a man while addressing the person as a female without anyone realizing it because during thatera, it was disrespectful for a woman to speak to a man in the tone that she did in the response. But she knew what trouble she was getting herself into regardless if it was to a man or a fellow nun.Her bravery sets her as a role model for woman that they shouldn’t take disrespect from a man and that they should fight for their rights. She explains that in her reply when she discusses thatSilence is negative which in her case is ironic because her speaking out caused her a negative outcome.
Sor Juana never attacked back, but instead, she showed in her work her push for women to have secularlives while maintaining a respectful tone. Like most people, no one likes religion being forced upon them. It just causes them to turn away from it more. But instead of being rude about havingreligion forced on her because she was in the convent, she explained that the reason she isn’t like the rest of the nuns is because she’s ill equipped to evaluate the bible which is why she sticks to hersecular writings. She claims she has too much respect for the Sacred Word to disgrace it with her own words.
