Southwest Airlines 2002: An Industry under Siege
Southwest Airlines is one of the lowest-cost airlines in United States of America an also the largest one. It operates more than 3,400 flights perday and has a fleet of 565 planes, from Boeing 737-300 to Boeing 737-800. Southwest operates more Boeing 737 aircraft than any other airline in the world using low costs (the main objective of thecompany).

Its principal station is based in Love Field, Dallas, Texas. It was built in 1971, when Southwest Airlines began costumer service on June 18 in the same year, offering service of intrastatetravels and using only three Boeing 737 aircraft.

Acquisitions
1985 and 1987 were the years when Southwest acquired Muse Air and TranStar Airlines, which a few years after became subsidiary of thecompany but they operated as an independent airline.

In 1993, Southwest Airlines acquired Morris Air, another airline which was focused in the Northwest of America. This way, Southwest retainedseven of Morris’ operating stations and changed for the first time the routes of the airline, extending its service into the Northwest of United States of America and adding seven more stations to itsproperty.
Recently, Southwest has acquired AirTrain Airways and with that purchase, it has had the possibility to extend its service to Mexico, the Caribbean and Atlanta as well.

Headquarters
As itsaid above, the Southwest Airlines headquarters is located on the grounds of Dallas Love Field in the Love Field neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. However, the company has had others headquarters inother cities.
First, the airline had its headquarters in Regal Row building in Dallas, by Love Field, but in 1990, Southwest moved into its current headquarters, which has 436,000 square feet of space.In addition, Southwest has a total of 59 stations distributed in different places of North America, all of them headed by the vice president of ground operations, Dave Ridley.
