Albert Goodwill Spalding

A professional on and off the field.

At the age of twenty-one, A.G. Spalding joinedthe pro baseball team known as the Boston Red Stockings. There, he generated statistics that rival today’s best. Achieving a career batting average of .323, an earned run average of 2.14 and overall win percentage pitching of .796, a record that still stands. After his pro-career, he went on to manage the Chicago White Stockings and began expanding his true love off the field.

His first sportinggoods store, A.G. Spalding & Bros., opened in Chicago in 1876 and within a decade stretched across the United States with fifteen stores. Eventually, he organized the first promotional world tour for baseball, and was selected by President McKinley as commissioner of the Summer Olympics.

Spalding gathered a sporting library with nearly three hundred volumes. He became a source for theprofessional standards for athletes in every discipline.
