Spartacus

Spartacus directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on the book by Howard Fast, is a movie that best describes the revolt of a group of slaves who later become legion. This group is led by the gladiator Spartacus, against the Roman Empire. The revolt by Spartacus of Thrace, gladiator and slave in the house of the coach Lentulus Batiatus, begins when, after a week of training to compete inthe olympic games to kill in the sand, leads a rebellion full of gladiators. While moving from one city to another the number increases, since new slaves are joining the rebellion. Under his leadership they will try to reach southern Italy, where they intend to return to their homes.

After watching this movie, it is easy to understand and observe the theme and arguments the writer is makingabout the history of the Roman Empire. Spartacus was a hero to the slaves back when the Roman Empire was strong, as Harriet Tubman in the 1800 at the United States. When I was analyzing the theme of this movie, I taught about this woman who is famous for freeing the slaves during the Civil War. At the end, they were both brave, intelligent, humble, and with strong characters beings, thatovercame fear to stand strong in the adversities and to be able to defend their believes.

In Spartacus, the main character (Spartacus) is a man, who since birth, has always been a slave. His parents were also slaves. One day, he was bought and entered the school of gladiators led by Batiatus. Spartacus fell in love with a British slave named Varinia, who is also a slave since she was 13 years old,who later had a child with Spartacus. After a long period of hard training to become the best gladiator, Crassus comes to the house of Batiatus with three companions who are wanted Batiatus to offer to gladiators to fight until death. Because of the immorality reflected by these individuals, Spartacus was set to fight with one of his best friends. His friend was not able to kill Spartacus. After athree- pronged spear against Crassus and his entourage, Spartacus’ friend tries to kill them but Crassus stabs a knife and then dies. Varinia has been bought by Crassus and thereby was separated from Spartacus due to this incident. After the deathly challenge, the slaves in the House of Batiatus reveal themselves and escaped. They begin to form a small army in which others join them to formrebellions against their owners. Their purpose is to obtain freedom and to return to their families and their hometowns.

As Tubman, Spartacus rebelled against his situation as a slave. Harriet’s owner died and she was able to escape with her brothers from the next owners in line. Her decision was ultimate: either she escaped or she rather be dead. At the end she was brought back the new owners, inwhich she became a slave again. The next time she escaped she was successful. This time she used an underground railroad. She is famous for freeing many slaves through the unknown ways of this railroad. Nobody knew of her ways. This was different in Spartacus times. It is important to describe the roles of slaves in history, in order to understand the real intentions of Spartacus and hiscolleagues.

The role of slaves was observed during this film. The slave was considered an inferior human being that “belonged” to a superior one. For the Romans, the natural destination of slaves was to serve their richer masters with fidelity and devotion. Slaves were part of the family, and therefore, they had to obey and to love their masters, otherwise they were punished. There were no rules on howto treat slaves, since they had no rights and were fully subjected to the power of their masters. Slaves served for different purposed. Some were slaves who were civil servants dealing with administrative affairs of the prince. Even slaves were property and had more influence than other free men. There were slaves with “careers”. Some were architects, singers, comedians, and masters in grammar....
