1. Introduction to the work incident

The work incident raises a very delicate and interesting issue to be treated in a big northeastern construction company.

One ofthe supervisors of that company, Mr. Larry Werst, has been a very efficient employee for many years. However at present, the manager of the company notices that there are series of rumors spreading around the company about the fact that Mr. Werst is an alcoholic.
Adding to these rumors, the manager has also been able to realize that there have been some other evidences related to the fact that Mr.Werst is sometimes under the effects of alcohol at work.

The following chart summarizes the most important features related to Mr. Larry Werst performance at work.

As a matter or fact, the manager has never been able to prove thatthe supervisor has been drinking at work or that he has been under its effects at work. As a manager in a construction company, he knows that this issue is definitely alarming and that it is a dangerous security matter to be proved and treated.

For the following study of this case and for the satisfactory proposal of solutions, there is a fundamental point that should be clarified: What isAlcoholism? Official organisms as the “The National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence” of the United States answer this question as follows: “Alcoholism is not a moral issue; instead it is a treatable illness which causes deterioration in job performance.”

Finally, the main points to be discussed in the present case are: How to prove that Mr. Werst has a problem with alcohol? What to do inthat case? The possible solution of this problem is truly interesting and challenging because it is a serious issue for the company but also a very delicate matter that can invade the employee’s privacy. That is why alcoholism in the workplace, in any kind of business, presents many legal and human resource management issues.

2. SWOT analysis of the situation

The different aspects that canbe discussed and observed out of the situation that is taking place in the construction are summarized with a SWOT analysis. The use of this method helps to have a quick overview of the situation.
