The government of Laos, one of the few remaining one-party communist states, began decentralizing control and encouraging private enterprise in 1986.
Subsistence agriculture,dominated by rice cultivation in lowland areas, accounts for about 30% of GDP and 75% of total employment.
The economy has benefited from high foreign investment in hydropower, mining, and construction.On the fiscal side, Laos initiated a VAT tax system in 2010. Laos is led by an authoritarian, centralized and secretive regime.
The Constitution states that sovereignty is thepower that belongs to the people, is established by the people, and is authorized for the sake of the people. It defends political rights in elections, domestic policy regarding the creation of unityand equality among several ethnic groups of the country, policy and religions that legally allows the activities of all Buddhists as well as of other religions, a social protection policy, and policyconcerning the defense of the nation.
Regarding Foreign Policy, the objectives focus on peace, independence, friendship and cooperation. It advocates the expansion of relations and cooperation withall countries under the principles of living together in peace, respecting their sovereign independence, non-interference in the internal affairs of others and the enjoyment of joint benefits.LANGUAGE
