St. Thomas the Apostle
Catholic saints are holy people and human people who lived extraordinary lives. Each saint the Church honors responds to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts;Thomas the Apostle is one of these people, he is a patron saint. The term 'Patron' is used in Christian religions, including the Roman Catholic religion, to describe holy and virtuous men and women whoare considered to be a defender of a specific group of people or of a country. There is a patron for virtually every cause, country, profession or special interest. Saint Thomas is the patron ofArchitects, Builders and India.
Thomas was called the Twin (Didymus), for he was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. He was a loyal follower of Jesus at the time of the crucifixion in Jerusalem. Like therest of His followers Thomas was devastated at the death of his Master. When the other disciples gave him the news of the resurrection of Jesus, he was unable to believe this to be true. Jesusapproached Thomas for his lack of faith and being so unwilling to believe. Thomas received the proof of the resurrection seeing the points where the nails had penetrated Christ's hands and the wounds in Hissides where the spear had penetrated. He then put his fingers in the places where the wounds were inflicted. Thomas also saw the point of the nails and put his fingers in the place of the nails andhis hand into Jesus’ side. Thomas then believed. The story of ‘Doubting Thomas' came from his opposition to believe in the resurrection.
Thomas the Apostle, reluctantly at first, undertook to preachin Persia and India, where many people converted to Christianity. There, he helped many find God through the church and spread Christianity. Many did not agree with his ideals nor with his practices.They did not like the fact of just one God. Thomas was eventually stabbed to death by opposes of the Christian teachings and died in India.
