Having read Hugh Bibbs article, The Faith of the English Kings, it has become very clear to me that there is no such thing as a pure religion. Dating as far back as history goes, there has alwaysbeen an inherent belief in a greater power whether it is in a Pagan god or a Christian God, we as a people have always felt the need to look toward a greater power for a sense of protection, strengthand guidance. As religion became more prominent and as nations and cultures blended together, the belief in a God has become stronger and more pointed in a unified direction. As with the Celts and theAnglo-Saxons, Christianity made its way into the everyday life of the general population and eventually into the life of Kings. This, marked the onset of the spread of Christianity throughoutBritain and soon, the rest of the world. As these people mingle and become more intertwined with each other, the blending of religious practice occurs.
Upon reading the article I was pleasantly surprisedto find vast amounts of information concerning the evolution of Christianity which for me as always been a fascinating point of history. I was also surprised to discover that even when a king wouldjoin a religion, there would still be some dissention among the people and in some cases even rebellion. However, it does make sense that the sword would still have a mighty influence on the people.This is an important article for anyone interested cultural studies as religion and culture are very closely related and one always influences the other. Seeking to understand why people did whatthey did really help a student of culture understand and appreciate the decisions that were made, alliances that were developed and wars that were fought. In order to gain a full appreciation andunderstanding of the events and cultures of the past it is imperative that an in-depth study of the kings, their religious influence and impact on the people be studied and analyzed, and without a proper...
