Sherlock Holmes, “A Study in Scarlet” by Arthur Conan Doyle

Author: Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was analcoholic, and that is why his mother, Mary Foley, looked for a job to get money and send him to a Jesuit school called Stella Matutina (Feldkirch, Austria) where he was educated until 1876.

From 1876to 1881, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. During his time at University, Arthur began to write short stories, these would later be published in Chambers’ Edinburgh Journal before hewas 20. This was just the beginning of one of the most important writers in the English history.

During his life, Arthur was married twice, first in the year of 1885 and then later in 1907. In 1887Arthur published his first novel, called “A Study in Scarlet”. Here he introduced his character of Sherlock Holmes, who later became to the most famous literary detective character.

In 1902 theSherlock Holmes’ creator was knighted. Since then he was called Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He died of a heart attack in 1930 at the age of 71.

Principal characters: Sherlock Holmes: Is a privatedetective, or how he likes to be called, a “consulting detective”, tall, slim, cold, ironic, witty and intellectually restless. He is very intelligent, a great scientist and an excellent boxer. He also playsthe violin. In the book, Watson describes him like this: “In height he was rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing […]and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision.[…].
