Switzerland is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe, the Alps occupy more than 70% of its territory in the central and southern sectors, while the Jura, in thenorthwest. The Swiss Alps are part of the largest mountain system in Europe and are famous for their jagged peaks and steep gorges. There are several ranges within the Alps, the Pennine, which contains thehighest peak in Switzerland, Mount Dufourspitze (4,634 m), in the Monte Rosa massif. The Jura (Celtic word meaning 'forest') are lower and smaller than the Alps and are famous for the manycross-country trails that attract many visitors. The renowned Swiss watch industry began in the villages of the Jura mountains.
Between the two mountain systems lies the Swiss plateau, with an averagealtitude of 395 m and 50 km wide, extending from Lake Geneva (in German, Genfersee), in the extreme southwest to Lake Constance (German, Bodensee) in the northeast. The plateau is dotted with hills. Betweenthe mountain ranges of the Alps and the Jura also long valleys connected by transverse gorges, one of these valleys is the Engadine along the Inn River in the southeast. Almost all rivers run Swissvalleys, sometimes interrupted by picturesque waterfalls as Staubbach breaks (about 300 m) in the canton of Bern. The main river system is formed by the Rhine and its tributaries. Other important riversare the Rhone and Ticino, but the Swiss rivers are not navigable for considerable distances. Switzerland is famous for its lakes, particularly those of the Alpine region, known for its scenic beauty.In addition to Lake Geneva, Lake Constance, other prominent lakes are: Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore (or Maggiore), which is the lowest point in Switzerland (194 m above sea level), the surfaceItalian territory spans, and the lakes of Neuchâtel, Lucerne, Zurich (in German, Zürichsee) of Brienz and Thun, who are entirely in Switzerland.
