At the age of 14, I set a very unique goal for myself. It was a secret project I performed for months after school. I initiated it when Iwent to the elementary school, furtively, to get some basic reading books. When I got back home, I told my grandmother that we were going to start ourproject. My grandmother was born in Kalamata, Greece. Her family was poor, and she had to help them in the house. She didn’t have the opportunity to attend school. Mygrandma wanted to have a better life. She heard that in America was easy to get rich, so in 1916, at the age of 14, she decided to immigrate to America. Whenshe arrived in America, she realized that it was not going to be as easy as she thought it would be. My grandma went through hard times, having to work inorder to survive. She learned some English, but her reading skills were limited. After some years, she got married and had five daughters. At the age of 14, Idecided that I was going teach her something I knew. I felt that it was a good way in which I could repay some of the sacrifices she had done, and all the thingsshe had taught me. We started with basic things, like the alphabet and vowels. Every afternoon we would read a second-grade book. Years passed and she did notlearn much English, but she kept trying hard. We laughed at her pronunciation mistakes. After she passed away, we emptied her house. I found the basic readersbook on her night-table drawer. I returned the books back to the elementary school, hopping that someday a young person will use them for the same purpose I did.
