Olympic Games The modern Olympic Games are a huge international event with thousands of athletes participating in a lot of competitions. More than 200 nations participate in The Olympic Games. Theystarted in Olympia in Greece, they were a religious and athletic festival celebrated every four years. The Olympics were very important to honor Zeus and Pelops. In 1821 Greece fought a war over theirindependence and they revived the interest in the Olympic Games. The Panathenaic Stadium was restored and there were the games in 1870 and 1875. In 1896 Olympic Games in Paris, women first took partin Olympics. Today the Modern Olympic Games have different Symbols, those are: The Olympic flag, the Olympic rings, the Olympic Torch and the Olympic mascot. The Olympic rings consists of five ringsand represents the unity of the five continents: Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe. The flag flown for the first time an the 1920 Summer Olympics in Belgium. The torch is lighted by a womanmonths before the games, she places the torch inside a mirror focusing the sun’s rays. The Olympic mascot is an animal of human figure that represents the cultural heritage of the host country. TheOlympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius, a latin expression meaning “Faster, Higher, Stronger”.The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most importantthing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.
