Summit Of The Americas

1. The United States of America has been considered to be one of the world powers and had great influence in Latin America. However, it has recently been said that the U.S. is losing its power. Inpast years the U.S. was able to hold great power in the Summits of the Americas, they blocked topics like drugs and Cuba from coming up on the agenda. Yet in this year’s Summit of the Americas two ofthe main, though unofficial, topics where exactly those: Cuba and drug policy. This shows that while the U.S. still has some power in Latin America it is not as strong as it used to be.


2.President Michel Martelly was unable to attend due to health reasons; therefore I (Laurent Lamothe, Minister of Foreign Affairs) am here as representative head of state for Haiti. It is important for Haiti tobe present in the Summit because there are three key topics in the agenda that are of utmost importance to our country. The first one would be in regards to natural disasters. As it is well knownthere was an earthquake, of a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, in Haiti in 2010 that affected around 3 million people in the country. Only 43% of the monetary help promised has been given to us,the other 57% percent has not yet reached our hands. This means that the plans for reconstructing all the damage that happened because of the earthquake have not been able to be fulfilled. We ask ofthose who promised aid and assistance to our country to please carry it out so that we are able to rebuild Haiti.
Another of the points in the official agenda pertain to us, it is poverty reductionsand inequalities. After the earthquake the poverty increased to incredibly high levels, because of the magnitude of it we are here looking for a way to be able to have sustainable and long termdevelopment for Haiti.
