Taj Mahal–Agra, India

The Taj Mahal, which means  ”crown of buildings”,  is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, theTaj Mahal is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and stands as a symbol of eternal love.
In 1631, Shah Jahan, emperor during the Mughal empire’s period of greatestprosperity, was grief-stricken when his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, died during the birth of their 14th child, Gauhara Begum.Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632, one year after her death.  Thetomb took roughly 12 years to complete while the remaining parts of the complex took an additional 10 years.
The Taj Mahal was constructed using materials from all over India and Asia and over 1,000elephants were used to transport building materials. The translucent white marble was brought from Makrana, Rajasthan, the jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China. The turquoise was from Tibetand the Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, while the sapphire came from Sri Lanka and the carnelian from Arabia. In all, twenty eight types of precious and semi-precious stones were inlaid into the whitemarble.
A labor force of twenty thousand workers was recruited across northern India. Sculptors from Bukhara, calligraphers from Syria and Persia, inlayers from southern India, stonecutters fromBaluchistan, a specialist in building turrets, another who carved only marble flowers were part of the thirty-seven men who formed the creative unit.

The central focus of the complex is the tomb. Likemost Mughal tombs, the basic elements are Persian in origin. The marble dome that surmounts the tomb is the most spectacular feature. Its height of around 35 meters (115 ft) is about the same as thelength of the base. Throughout the exterior of the complex, passages from the Qur’an are used as decorative elements.
