STARTERS A.1.1
INTRODUCTION

English Guide Starters A.1.1 is a useful tool for students learning English at CUN at the starter level. It provides them with practical exercises that promote communication in oral and written ways.
This guide has been developed according to the syllabus that teaches English emphasizing the communicative competence which includes the following topics:
Linguisticcomponent: it is based to understand English basic structures.
Sociolinguistic component: it is based on stimulating the use of English from cultural and social aspects.
Pragmatic component: it is based on the importance of use of the language according to different contexts such as formal and informal.
The main aim is to develop skills in order to learn English and use their communicativecompetence to ask for and give information about themselves. Starting from their own environment, students can develop strategies in which they acquire linguistic competences and also autonomy to achieve their own linguistic goals.
This guide follows Task Approach characteristics where students can solve problematic issues involving different aspects of the language. Based on different situations,the students can find activities related with a specific topic and vocabulary.
ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
LISTENING:  Students can recognize familiar words and basic vocabulary concerning themselves, their families and surroundings. Moreover the students can identify different kind of English sounds.
READING: Students can understand familiar names, words and simple sentences and texts, for examplenews, tales, posters or catalogues. They can find main ideas from magazines, articles and advice columns to understand the author’s point of view giving their own interpretation about reading. 
SPOKEN INTERACTION: Students can interact in a simple way; they can ask and answer basic questions about familiar topics.
SPOKEN PRODUCTION: Students can use simple phrases and sentences to describe wherethey live and people who they know. Therefore they can discuss topics related to daily situations.
WRITING: Students can write short descriptions, texts or postcards. They can fill out forms with personal details; they can also identify events and feelings expressed in written texts. In addition, they will be able to write ideas or comments.

Juan EstebanAristizabal Vasquez was born on August 9, 1972, in Antioquia, Colombia. Juanes began to learn how to play the guitar when he was seven years old. His father and older brothers taught him. He liked all kind of music so learned to play traditional Latin sounds such as boleros, tangos, and cumbias. He formed “Ekhymosis”, a hard rock band. Soon after that, he started a solo career and became known as Juanes....
