E-mail: sergio.pena@uautonoma.cl Office Hours: Friday afternoon or byappointment via email Semester: Spring 2010 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I. Course Description This course isintended to provide a broad overview of Applied Linguistics (AP). It will introduce the basic concepts of language teaching, language learning, and language assessment. Furthermore, it will touch uponthe basic concepts of second language research. In order to apply the concepts studied in class and to relate theory to practice, an AP project will be designed by the students whose core will beEnglish language teaching in their practicum settings in light of MINEDUC’s English syllabuses. Towards the end of the semester, guidelines shall be provided concerning the design, implementation, andsubmission of the final written project. Given that this course is highly theoretical and demands strong reading skills and reflection/discussion capacity, students are expected to do the assignedreadings beforehand.

II. Objectives o Comprehend the purpose and scope of the field of Applied Linguistics. o Relate theoretical to practical aspects of Applied Linguistics. o Analyze, criticize andreflect upon the dimensions of Applied Linguistics: language teaching, language learning, and language assessment. o Design, implement and assess a mini-research project based on the theoretical principlesstudied in class. o Analyze the Ministry of Education English syllabuses and their approach to the teaching of language skills, grammar, and vocabulary.
