Accounting Fraud: An Annotated Bibliography


Clikeman, P. M. (2009). Called to account: Fourteen financial frauds that shaped the American accountingprofession (pp. 1-53). New York, New York: Routledge.

The annotation above is formatted to APA guidelines according to the Bedford Handbook (8th Ed.). Clikeman offers his views and analysis of theaccounting profession since its early beginnings in Great Britain. He elaborates on how the British understood the value of the accounting profession to business, especially in a growing industrializedsociety. He then shifts his attention to how irrelevant businesses thought the accounting profession was. This was a key element for me to consider Clikeman’s book as a reliable source for myresearch. The accounting profession has experienced significant changes over the course of history. Since the beginning of the profession in America, business didn’t think the accounting profession wouldprovide any value to finances in general. This fact caught my attention because I was able to use it the views on the profession in the early 1900’s and compare the findings to current times. Inoticed a lot of similarities. Clikeman’s detailed explanation of the events that have taken place in the accounting profession, since the early 1900’s, also provided me with key information to discussregulation and to establish a potential solution to the major issues tarnishing the image of accountants in society today.
