(Answers will vary and may include the following: it is the complete thing; it is all of something.)When we say something is one-half, what do we mean? (Answers will vary and may include that it is a half of something.) REVIEW 1. Hold up one of the pieces of fruit, such as the apple, so that it isvisible to all the students, and ask the following questions: What am I holding up? (An apple) How would you describe this apple? (Answers will vary and may include the following: it is red; it has astem; it has skin; it is sweet; it is a whole apple.)

Discuss the responses, leading the students tounderstand that this is a whole apple. Then use the knife to cut the apple in half, and hold up one half of the apple so that it is visible to the students. Ask the following question: Now what I amholding up?
