For some people, a tattoo is just an image that they put on their skin; for others, it is a work of art; however, in reality tattoos are more than meets theeye, since they also reflect one of the earliest known forms of communication. To tell a story, ancient tattoos used to convey deep messages and many modern tattoos do the same thing nowadays. Infact, a tattoo can identify the wearer as a member of a certain group. Moreover, tattoos symbolize or reflect an emotion or an important event that the wearer has experienced. For this reason, I stronglybelieve that, despite what society may think about tattooing nowadays, it is still an artistic expression.
In the first place, tattoos are part of the visual arts. According to TheEncyclopedia Britannica Online, art is "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others." By analyzing this definition, wemight say that tattooing fits perfectly with that description. However, a tattoo is not only a piece of art because we can share it with others, it is because of its beauty and its color among otherthings; indeed, you can see a tattoo and the design of it can tell you something; you see it and immediately you can feel that it is not only an insignificant drawing that someone imagines. On thecontrary, it has a meaning that goes beyond the design on the skin, a meaning that you can relate to the wearer of the tattoo.
Furthermore, through tattoos you can express your emotions,feelings and show the most important and memorable events in your life. The main reason why people have tattoos these days is that they want to remember memorable events such as a relative’s death or areligious belief. It is not only to show a piece of art; it is about having something meaningful on your skin, something that is going to stay there forever, something which shows your real feelings....
