TCL - New multinational from China
The documentary shows the actual situation of TCL, the first Chinese multinational. TCL was founded in 1981 as a public company, 100% of shares belonging to theChinese Republic. At this time the state is not anymore a mayor shareholder of TLC. It was a kind of capitalistic experimient for the comunist government. With time the oficial Chinese policy of thestate was changing, getting more liberal and much closer to an occidental model of economy. Nowadays it is considered as a ¨socialism specialized¨ in the sense of having market´s traces in a Chinesepragmatical way of making business. Oficially the comunist party does not run TLC, nonetheless has an important role in its management. TLC, as all the Chinese companies, has on its payroll a member ofthe comunist party. Also an oficial comunist ideology is clearly seen on each step and on every level. However, there is observed a new tendency: the cult of the party has been replaced by the cult ofthe company.
Mr. Li, the president of TLC, has been an employee of TLC for over 20 years. He started as a technician and reached the top-position at the company. He comes from a humble family,however, finished his studies and is an ingenieur. His education gave him an opportunity of profesional growth. Forbes chose him in 2003 an asiatic businessman of the year. He obtained the position of thepresident in a way of nomination by comunist party. The model of Chinese economy accepts an arrengement between a non-fully-statal-company and the government. For this reason Mr. Li may occupy theposition of a member of the comunist central committee at the same time.
TCL growth model is based on two strategies: firstly on acquisition of occidental companies such as Thomson, Philips, Alcateland Panasonics, and secondly on Chinese domestic sales.
