Lesson 1 Teacher Language in the Classroom The first day of class is an opportunity to introduce oneself and thecourse to the students, learn something about them, and begin to create a classroom environment. While each teacher has their own unique "first day," here are some suggestions that you may find useful:Be prepared. A well structured lesson plan, containing the class profile as well as information on the language learned in the previous course, could come in handy. Be direct and authentic. Accordingto Paula Denton, when teachers say what they mean and speak in a kind, straightforward tone, students learn that they can trust us. They feel respected and safe, which helps them developself-discipline and take the risks that are necessary for learning. Listen and give students time. Show interest and listen to their answers to your questions. Be patient; they take time to reply. Remember, theyneed to get used to your voice and, most importantly, they need time to think, rehearse what to say and gather the nerve to speak. Establish a professional - yet warm - relationship. Welcome them asthey enter the classroom and try to learn their names. You may find a seating plan useful for this. Smile. When all else fails, smile a lot. Students will think you like them - and your job.
It is veryimportant to use language appropriately when you speak. By appropriacy in the classroom, we are talking about using language that is correct and fits well with the learners’ level, their age andtheir level of language formality (register). For example, is it a class of teenagers, or a group of businessmen?
