During the Independence eve, and beginning of it Theatre was a daily or very common nightly activity betweenthe high class of the society. In Mexico city, people attended to the “Coliseo Nuevo” opened to public in 1753. The “Coliseo Nuevo” opened its doors from Tuesday to Sunday, includingholidays.
Daily life anecdotes, feelings, frustrations of Mexican-Spanish society, and even the beginning of the Independence movement would be represented in the plays.
Specialpresentations would be prepared for special occasions, such as the celebration of the Cadiz Constitution in 1812; the play in pro of the “Inesita”, a famous actress of the times who wasthought to be Viceroy´s lover, in 1813; or the celebration after the recent execution of the Spanish insurgent Xavier Mina.
The whole scene of a theatre night would begin more orless at 9 o´clock when people would start arriving to the place. Most of the times, people attended with their party suits or dresses, and arrived in cars. Although the highest class usedto come to the presentations, inside they were not as fancy as they might seem. The mix of the smoke generated from the oil lamps that created an almost permanent mist and the smellspread by food , people and cigars made the environment to be physically unpleasant. The behavior of some people didn’t match with their social level either, as they were people throwingfood waste to the people in the areas below, and sometimes even still burning cigarette butts, that provoked the burning of clothing and, therefore constant fights between spectators.Despite the misbehavior of a lot of people in the theatre, it was seen as the highest spectacles of the time, and it was a traditional and almost daily activity if the high class.
