What is an operating system?
This is type of software program that determine how the process or interacts with the user and systemcomponents including the way information is displayed on the screen and how the mouse works. The operating system can also be called OS.
Different computer uses different operating system that providesdefferent functions
Functions of operating system
* It controls how data is written on computer disks
* It provides a group of common functions that other programs can use. The programs arecalled Drivers.

Drivers
Drivers are small piece of software that tells the operating system exactly how to communicate with a piece of hardware.
Example: a printer driver, sound track that tellsthe operating system exactly how to translate data into audio signals that are sent to the speakers .All drivers are control from the device manager.
Difference between operating system software andapplication software
The operating system provides the computing environment in which the application software functions.It provides the program used to display a window on the screen.
WhileApplications program makes use of programs in the opperating system every time it uses a window, stores a document in RAM.Application software is dedicated to perform a task and it makes use of thefeatures provided by the opperating system to display, print and store files.
Types of operating system
Operating system are optimized to help appication software use the computer hardware.
Hardwarelimitations of size , capacity and computing power require different types of operating system.
