ENGINE IDENTIFICATION VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN)
The VIN is stamped on a metal pad located near lower left corner of windshield. A "4" in the eighth character of VIN identifies 2.2L 4-cylinder engine.

ENGINE BUILD DATE & ENGINE CODE
The engine build date (month and day) and the engine code are stamped on left side of cylinder block, near cylinder head.See Fig. 1. Engine code LN2 indicates 2.2L 4-cylinder engine.

PARTIAL VIN
A partial VIN (9 characters) is stamped on lower left side of cylinder block, at cylinder block-to-transmission flange. See Fig. 1.

ADJUSTMENTS

VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
lifters. Engine is equipped withnon-adjustable hydraulic valve

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION * PLEASE READ THIS FIRST *
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. NOTE: For reassembly reference, label allelectrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removal. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removal.

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
Except Beretta & Corsica 1) Loosen fuel tank filler cap to release tank vapor pressure. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect fuel pump electrical connector at fuel tank. Start and run engine until engine stops. 2) Engage starter forat least 3 seconds to ensure remaining fuel pressure is released. Disconnect negative battery cable. Reconnect fuel pump connector. Since some residual pressure may exist in fuel system, cover fuel line fitting with a shop towel before loosening. Beretta & Corsica 1) Loosen fuel tank filler cap to release tank vapor pressure. Remove fuse No. 16 (20-amp fuel pump fuse) from fuse block, locatedbelow left side of instrument panel. Start and run engine until engine stops. 2) Engage starter for at least 3 seconds to ensure remaining fuel pressure is released. Disconnect negative battery cable. Install fuse. Since some residual pressure may exist in fuel system, cover fuel line fitting with a shop towel before loosening fitting.

ENGINE
NOTE: NOTE: Remove engine through top of enginecompartment. This procedure for Cavalier & Sunfire involves removing engine and transaxle as an assembly from the bottom of the vehicle.

Removal & Installation 1) Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Drain cooling system. Raise hood fully (disconnect lower end of gas-charged hood support). Remove air cleaner and intake duct. 2) Disconnect controlcables, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses, and electrical connectors as necessary. Remove engine mount strut. Rotate engine forward on its mounts. Remove power steering pump (leave hoses connected). Remove bolts securing engine to transaxle (except upper 2 bolts). 3) Rotate engine rearward. Raise and support vehicle. Remove

right front wheel. Remove engine splash shield. Disconnect exhaust pipe. Removeflywheel cover and starter motor. Remove nuts securing engine mount to frame. Remove bolts securing torque converter to flexplate. Remove A/C compressor (leave hoses connected). 4) Disconnect front exhaust pipe support bracket at transaxle. Remove bolt that secures transaxle support bracket to transaxle. Lower vehicle. Rotate engine forward. Remove one of 2 remaining bolts securing engine to...
