Poe wrote that every word in a story should help create “Single overwhelmingimpression”. How well have he done that in “The tell-tale heart” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”?
In the stories I’m going to work with, Poe follow exactly what he mean with “Single Overwhelmingimpression”. I´ll work with both, “the Tell- Tale heart” and “The murders in Rue Morgue”, to contrast what we extract from the stories and made conclusions that help us answer the question. They havesimilarities that suggest in what we identify as Poe style and differences that make a doubt for us to analyze and make clear our ideas.
I´m going to begin with Irony, which the main literary devicesused by Poe, and its representative in both story; In the “Tell-tale heart” Irony is used to adjust and make a deeper suspense mood, for example –“True!-Nervous-very, very dreadfully nervous I hadbeen and am; but why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses – not destroyed-not dulled them...”(Poe, Page 1) At this example we can see clearly Poe intention using irony to makefeel the mood and how the character really is.
Irony is presented at the Murders in The Rue Morgue in the moment where we think that the Rue Morgue Murder would be a mystery because the police gotno clues rather than an ape (Ourang-Outang), and caught a suspect to deal the castigation, and then Dupin and analytical thinker suddenly solves the mystery just adjusting all the things he collectedfrom what he done and knew (Poe). These use of irony help to understand more what the narrator tells us at the beginning of the story about ingenuity and analysis.
Other device that is recognize isthe use of punctuation and Point of View, Poe at both stories use an especial punctuation particularly at his style, that make us feel the writing is actually what the narrator is thinking, throwing...
