Teenagers and Cosmetic Surgery
When a teenager is found in situations where they must take a drastic decision that will forever change their livessuch as what to study, what to do, getting a tattoo, piercing or be put on a cosmetic surgery, he or she is not really thinking about the future, neither thinking about the magnitude of his or herdecision and how these will affect both his or her body and life. Many teenagers want their body image to be accepted in society, and when some of them are not satisfied with their image, they turn toplastic surgery as an easy way to solve their problem. However, the problem might be deeper than we what we can perceive from the outside; there are different reasons why teenagers choose to be in acosmetic procedure.
One of the main reasons is lack of self-esteem. An American developmental psychologist states that “Throughout infancy and childhood, a person forms many identifications.But the need for identity in youth is not met by these” (Erikson, Identity and Religion, 73). Some adolescent struggle with their confidence because they did not build a personality that can stand foritself through their childhood. Perhaps teenagers have an idea of how they should be, meaning they tend to be the stereotype that society requires them to be and thus suppress their true feelings andthoughts. Not surprisingly, adolescents with self-esteem often believe a plastic surgery could raise their confidence.
Another reason is because of bullying. Unfortunately, we do verylittle as a society to cultivate differences and uniqueness. For example, a young man is constantly bothered by his “Dumbo ears”; while a 15 years old girl refuses to take showers at gym at schoolbecause her breasts are lopsided”.
