iDirect Modem Recovery Procedure

Step 1: Preparation
This procedure applies to: Version 6.0.1 and Later to be recovered to version 12.0.0.1 The following steps must be completed on the connecting PC before beginning to recover the modem 1) Obtain a good Options File for the modem,created using version 12.0.0.1 This options file must be provided by Newcom. Note: The Options File, at a minimum, must match the Model Type, Serial Number and Derived ID (DID) of the modem to be recovered. 2) Obtain the Software Image Package depending on your particular modem model and unzip them in a known folder in your PC (e.g. create a “temp” folder in your desktop and unzip the files there)You can obtain the Image Packages as follow: For X3 modems: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/idx3/Remote_Evolution_X3.zip For X5 modems: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/idx3/Remote_Evolution_X5.zip For 3000 series: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/idx3/Remote_iNFINITI_3000.zip For 5000 series: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/idx3/Remote_iNFINITI_5000.zip 3) You must also have the followingequipment: • A rollover console cable or DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter • A cross-over Ethernet cable • A terminal emulator (i.e. TeraTerm or HyperTerminal) Teraterm can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/teraterm.zip • iSite software version 12.0.0.1 (or any TFTP server). iSite can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/idx3/iDX3-iSite.zip • PuTTY (or any Secure Shellclient) Putty can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/putty.exe • WinSCP (or any Secure Copy client) WinSCP can be downloaded from: ftp://ftp.newcominternational.com/winscp.exe

Step 2: Loading Linux Package
The following procedure describes how to use the console connection to bypass the root password and manually load the Linux operating system kernel on the iDirect modem. To loadLinux from Redboot 1) Establish a serial connection with the modem through the console port in the back of the modem (see picture 2.1). Use following serial configuration: Speed: 9600 Kbps Bits: 8 Parity: N Stop bits: 1 Flow Control: None Picture 2.1 Console Port 2) Power cycle the modem. The message “DRAM Test Successful” displays on the console . Immediately press the spacebar 4 to 5 times inorder to interrupt the boot load sequence and enter Redboot . The “Redboot>” prompt displays. 3) Enter the following command to load the Linux kernel: fis load Linux exec –c “root=/dev/mtdblock2 console=ttyS1,9600 single” the “/#” prompt is displayed, indicating a login without password To change the Linux password 5) Enter the following command: Passwd

6) Type a new password (P@55w0rd! is thedefault) and press Enter To obtain modem IP configuration information 7) Type the following command: ifconfig The modem IP and subnet mask are displayed in the first interface field “ixp0” or “ixp1” after “inet”. Configure your PC with the consecutive IP and same subnet mask. If a valid/correct IP address and subnet mask is not present, configure them entering the following command: ifconfignetmask 255.255.255.0 where: = ixp0 or ixp1 = desired address (e.g. 192.168.0.1) If you had to manually configure the modem’s IP address, configure your PC with the consecutive IP address and same subnet mask.

Step 3: Loading Image Package
1) Enter the following command from the console to increase the swapspace in the /tmp directory: df mount -t tmpfs -o remount,size=20M /tmp df 2) To use theTFTP Server included with iSite a. Close any open session of iSite b. Launch a new session on the iSite application c. Select File then TFTP (see picture 3.1) The TFTP Settings dialog box displays asking for your local folder.
