La palabra magnetismo tiene su origen en una isla del mar Egeo, en la región llamada Magnesia, donde los griegos hace ya más de 2000 años encontraron una piedras con característicasespeciales. Estas piedras, llamadas ahora magnetitas, tenían la particularidad de atraer trozos de metal o de atraerse o repelerse entre sí. Una de las primeras aplicaciones se la dieron los chinos en el siglo XII construyendo la brújula.
En el siglo XVI, William Gilbert hizo imanes artificiales frotando trozos de hierro contra la magnetita; identificó la “polaridad” de los imanes artificialessugiriendo que una brújula siempre señalará hacia el norte y el sur de la Tierra por tener propiedades magnéticas.
Los temas de electricidad y magnetismo se desarrollaron de manera independiente hasta 1820, cuando un físico danés llamado Hans Christian Oersted descubrió que una corriente eléctrica afecta a una brújula magnética. Posteriormente el francés André – Marie Ampere propuso que las corrientes...
