Chapter 1
It is almost December and Jonas feels anxious about the coming ceremony of Twelve. He is trying to understand his feelings and decides, after thinking about it for a while and comparing the events like the airplane that went over the community that scared him, that he feels apprehensive.
After dinner comes the time for telling feelings, the family first listens toLily, His Seven year old sister who talks about anger. He did not want to talk about his feelings, but it is against the rules. His parents tell Lily to go to her room while they talk to Jonas.
His Father who is a Nurturer and Mother who holds a prominent position at the Department of Justice explain what an important time this is and that he does not have to be afraid.
Chapter 2
Fathertells about how exciting December was for him, it brought changes. When the Ceremony occurred, the Ones were Named and given to the family that had applied for a child, only a boy and a girl to be assigned to each family. Nurtures like Father took care of the babies for their first year.
Father tells of a baby boy who is in the Nurturing Center who is called Gabriel (Gabe) who is havingproblems and explains that if he cannot be nurtured properly he will be released from the community.
The Ceremony of Twelve takes two long days. The Nines get their bicycles; they were not allowed to ride before then. The Twelves’ get their Assignment, a secret selection made by the Committee of Elders from the community. The Elevens were watched for a whole year to determine what the assignmentwould be. After this ceremony age will no longer be important and there won’t be any more ceremonies.
The Receiver is introduced as the most important Elder and he lived and worked alone. This is the Elder that makes the most important decisions for the community.
Jonas is worried about his best friend Asher’s assignment. Asher is fun, but has no serious interest and makes a game of everything.Father explains that after the Ceremony of Twelve the children will be with the Assignment group and start training. There will be no recreation or volunteer hours.
Lily becomes impatient because her parents are still talking with Jonas and she wants her comfort object, an elephant to go to sleep. Mother tells her that when she becomes an Eight she will no longer have it with her. Jonas’s wasa bear.
Jonas felt better after talking with his parents, but could not imagine what his assignment would be.
Chapter 3
Father brings home Gabriel in the basket behind his bicycle and Lily says how cute he is, and that he has funny eyes like Jonas. He feels chastised by what Lily is saying because Gabe has pale eyes like his. Almost everyone in the community has dark eyes and no one talksof these things, it was rude.
There were hardly any mirrors in the community for people to look at themselves. Jonas was self-conscious of his eyes, they were considered a rarity and those who had them a Depth in their look.
Gabe is assigned a Hippo as a comfort object. Lily says she hopes to be a Birthmother, but her mother explains that this is not a good assignment. They give birth tothree children and then go on to be Laborers. Mother tells her that if she likes children so much she should hope to become a Nurturer.
Females under Nine use ribbons and they must be kept neatly, something that Lily did not do, but was reminded of over the speaker system.
The first time Jonas sees things change happens with an apple. He is playing with Asher throwing an apple and he seessomething happen to it. He takes it home that afternoon and through the speaker everyone is reminded that snacks are to be eaten, not horded. His parents become aware that he has taken the apple and look at him upset because he is breaking the rules.
The evening went by in the normal routine and preparing for the day to come.
