El origen temprano del tenis es una cuestión que presenta un cierto grado de conflicto e incertidumbre. Por una parte se cree que los egipcios, los griegos, y los romanos antiguos practicaron un juego precursor. Los dibujos o las descripciones no se han descubierto, peroalgunas palabras árabes que se fechan a partir de épocas egipcias antiguas se citan como evidencia. Una teoría dice que el tenis conocido deriva de la ciudad egipcia de Tinnis junto al Nilo y la raqueta de la palabra árabe para la palma de la mano, rahat. Como contrapartida a hay quienes aseguran que el tenis es una creación netamente anglosajona.
