Teotihuacan (Nahuatl: Teotihuacán "Place where gods were made, city of the gods')? Note 1 is the name given to what was one of the largest cities in Mesoamerica during pre-Hispanic times. The place name is of Nahuatl origin and was used by the Aztecs, but they know the name they gave their inhabitants. The remains of the city are located northeast of the Valley of Mexico, in the municipalities ofSan Martin Teotihuacan and the Pyramid (State of Mexico), approximately 45 kilometers away from the center of Mexico City. The area of ​​archaeological monuments was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1987.
Teotihuacan's origins are still under investigation among specialists. Around the beginning of our era, Teotihuacan was a village that gained importance as a center of worship in thebasin of Anahuac. The first major buildings are from that era, as shown by the excavations at the Pyramid of the Moon. The heyday of the city took place during the Classic Period (ss. III-VII d. C.). At that stage, the city was an important commercial and political node which once had an area of ​​about 21 km2, with a population of 10mil to 20mil inhabitants. Teotihuacan's influence was felt byall walks of Mesoamerica, as shown by the findings in cities like Tikal and Monte Alban, among other places that had a significant relationship with Teotihuacan. The decline of the city occurred in the seventh century, in a context marked by political instability, internal rebellions and climate changes that caused a collapse in Northern Mesoamerica. It is unknown what the ethnic identity of the first inhabitants of Teotihuacan. Among the candidates are the Totonac, Nahua and otomangueana speaking peoples, particularly the Otomi. The most recent hypothesis suggests that Teotihuacan was a flourishing cosmopolitan city in which were involved various ethnic groups, as shown by the findings in the Zapoteccity neighborhood and the presence of objects from other regions of Mesoamerica, especially the Gulf region and the Maya area.
Teotihuacan has been of interest to societies after the decline of Teotihuacan culture in Mesoamerica. Its ruins have been explored since pre, among others, by the Toltecs and the Aztecs. The discovery of Teotihuacan objects in the archaeological sites of Tula and theTemple of Mexico-Tenochtitlan confirms this. In Postclassic Nahua mythology, the city appears as the scene of the fundamental myths of the Suns legend of the Mexica.
Currently, the remains of Teotihuacan are archaeological monuments area with more tourists in Mexico over Chichen Itza and Monte Alban. Teotihuacan archaeological excavations continue to this day, and have resulted in a gradual increasein the quality and quantity of knowledge we have about the city, which, incidentally, are unknown issues as important as its original name and ethnic affiliation of its founders. History

The period of greatest height of Teotihuacáncorresponds to the Early Classic period of Mesoamerica. However, the beginnings of the city should be placed in the first millennium of the Common Era.
