ABRIEF HISTORY OF VENEZUELA
The modern History of Venezuela began when Christopher Columbus set foot on Peninsula de Paria in August 1498.
In 1499, when the explorer Alonso de Ojeda was sailingalong the coasts, he saw that the indians of Guajiro´s houses were built over the waters of the Maracaibo Lake. He remembered Venice and decided to name this zone Little Venice. The next 100 years,the Spaniards were settling down in Venezuela. They taught the natives the Spanish language and the Catholicism. In 1777, the gouverment of Spain created the Captancy - General of Venezuela. Venezuelawas under the Spanish domination until 1821 when the patriotic army defeated the Spaniards in the Battle of Carabobo. Francisco de Miranda and Simón Bolívar were the leaders of the wars of liberation.The Republic of Colombia was formed by joining Nueva Granada, Venezuela, Ecuador and Panamá with Simón Bolívar as president. In 1830 the Colombian Federation was broken and the Republic of Venezuelawas born. Since then, many civilians and military dictators ruled Venezuela.
