The Ministry of Energy and Mines is the regulator of the energy and mines sector in Peru Its objective is to promote the sustainable development of the sector, promoting, legislating and ensuring the rational use of the naturalresources in harmony with the environment. Peru is a mining country that is recognized throughout the world for its geological potential, and as a proof Peru occupies top positions in the mining production rankings. In Latin America, Peru ranks first in Gold, Silver, Zinc, Lead, Tin, Bismuth, Indium and Tellurium; second in Copper, Molybdenum and Selenium; and fifth in Iron. Worldwide, Peru ranks first inSilver; second in Zinc and Copper; third in Tin, Tellurium and Bismuth; fourth in Lead and Molybdenum; fifth in Gold; eight in Indium and Selenium and seventeenth in Iron. In this context, the GENERAL MINING BUREAU, with the assistance of the PERCAN Project financed by the Canadian International Development Agency, has prepared the MINING ATLAS 2008 with the objective of providing mininginformation in a spatial and visual way. The MINING ATLAS 2008 contains a variety of maps that reflects information of the Peruvian mining activity such as production, reserves, hydrology, transportation routes, economic impact and geology.

El Ministerio de Energía y Minas es el ente rector del sector minero energético en el Perú, cuyo objetivo es promover el desarrollo sostenible de las actividadessectoriales, promoviendo, normando y cautelando el uso racional de los recursos naturales en armonía con el medio ambiente. El Perú es un país minero reconocido por su potencial geológico, prueba de ello, Perú ocupa posiciones líderes en la producción de metales. En Latino América ocupa el primer lugar en Oro, Plata, Zinc, Plomo, Estaño, Bismuto, Indio y Telurio; el segundo lugar en Cobre, Molibdenoy Selenio; y el quinto en Hierro. A nivel mundial, ocupa el primer lugar en Plata; el segundo lugar en Zinc y Cobre; el tercer lugar en Estaño, Telurio y Bismuto; el cuarto lugar en Plomo y Molibdeno; el quinto lugar en Oro; el octavo lugar en Indio y Selenio; y el décimo séptimo lugar en Hierro. En este contexto la DIRECCIÓN GENERAL DE MINERIA, con el apoyo del Proyecto PERCAN financiado por laAgencia Canadiense de Desarrollo International, ha elaborado el ATLAS MINERO 2008 con el objeto de presentar la información minera en mapas. El ATLAS MINERO 2008 contiene una variedad de mapas de la actividad minera en nuestro país con información tal como producción, reservas, vías de transporte, impacto económico y geología.
