THE INCIDENCE OF THE MEMORY ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN THE TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN THE STUDENTS FROM THE “12 DE MARZO” HIGH SCHOOL OF THE CITY OF PORTOVIEJO

 

 

2. INTRODUCTION

The teaching of English, inaddition to its social significance and cultural heritage is an increasingly important discipline in today's world, the high level of scientific and technical development and international cooperation among peoples. However, it has not been easy for specialists at global level, to find a suitable method that can answer certain questions related to foreign language learning in general and English inparticular, in the sense that many graduates of these courses are unable to have an acceptable level of language proficiency.

Throughout the XX and XXI century a variety of methods and techniques have been applied, and are still applied in various parts of the world for teaching foreign languages ​​mainly English today, but the practice has shown that at least in  countries like Ecuador, whereEnglish is taught as a foreign language it is inadequate to develop effectively the four basic skills of language (speaking, listening understanding, reading and writing), and much less to achieve an acceptable command of the different components of language, ie, grammar, semantics, vocabulary and pronunciation.

The situation created by changes and developments that have taken place in thefield of education since the late 80's and early 90's, brought undoubtely new expectations for teaching and learning English. In theory, these changes represented a forward step from the conceptual point of view, from a strictly structuralist method on the teaching of language to a functional approach to the nature of education, and in practice from an audio lingual methodology language teaching toa communicative approach, but implementing all the resources that can provide both the teacher and studentsto the the teaching learning process, and among these is the memory. Since the cognitive revolution in the 1950s, memory has become an integral issue in the information processing approach, the core is the analogy with the computer.

Our work aims to address one of the major learningresources that have had and has its impact in one way or another in the different methods of teaching English throughout this century and their approaches to the achievement of the different components of language and the development of language skills; in other words the achievement performance.  We also will deal about what is the work of memory in the process of language learning in our classrooms,and achievements that can be gotten by our faculty and students in standard courses in general education.

3. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

Previously it was thought that learning was synonymous of enabling students to answer questions, which can read, write and perform basic mathematical operations. Today we know that is not enough to read and write, and that just listening is not enough tolearn. "Our ability to learn is small it stay with us 25% of what was said, it is remembered 60% of what you see and hear, but it stay with us 95% of what you do."
