AMERICAN IMPERIALISM
Global leadership is both the price America pays and the benefit Americans derive from our wealth, our size and our strength. Worldwide hunger and poverty, the spread of nuclear weapons and the proliferation of violent conflicts harm us all. Economic development, better education, better control of arms, cooperation among nations and the peaceful resolution of conflicts helpAmericans enjoy greater prosperity and peace. Positive and active engagement in world affairs is the smart as well as the right thing for the United State to do. Yet among developed nations, America has become the least generous provider of either development aid or troops for peacemaking. Our virtue is fading.
A few of the early patriots might have expressed isolationist views, but many of themwere vigorous internationalists. Benjamin Franklin said, "Our cause is the cause of all mankind." Thomas Paine, the fervently religious man who gave us the name United States of America, said, "My country is the world." Today that spirit is not just noble; it is imperative.

He did not dare to venture close to shore because of the surrounding coral reefs -the world's top scuba-diving1 destination today-, which were a dreadfulsight to 16th century sailors.

One of thee first to set foot on Bermuda was accidental British "tourist" Henry May, whose French vessel was snared by the Bermudian coral reefs and ran aground on them in 1593. Nevertheless, the most famous fortuitous visitors were the shipwrecked passengers of a flagship that was sailing to Virginia in 1609, under the command of British Admiral Sir GeorgeSomers with the mission to rescue starving colonists in there. The Sea Venture, as his flagship was called, hit one of the reefs and could not sail any farther. Somers claimed the islands for Britain, and a passenger's account of the shipwreck that was read by Shakespeare is believed to have inspired him to write The Tempest.

Today the main force working to attract visitors to Bermuda is the...
