The textile industry grew very rapidly during the Industrial Revolution. Many factories were built as an alternative to rural life, and they were the opportunity foryoung girls to choose a different future than being housekeepers or mothers. Mill agents went to several towns searching for woman and girl workers for the factories nearby. Working there gave girlsself-confidence; therefore their independence grew into a strong character and a sense of womanhood.
Girls were destined to a life of motherhood and domestic service. The arrival of the IndustrialRevolution brought women the possibility of a different choice of future, and that is why working on textile mills was so appealing to them. Lucy Larcom felt every dollar she earned was fruit of her workand made her feel she was not a burden to her family. She enjoyed her working hours in the mill because they were “just like play” and she could share stories with the other girls. Working in the millsgave girls like Lucy self-confidence because since they were little they “Were often told that it was our duty to develop any talent we might possess, or at least to learn how to do some one thingwhich the world needed, or which would make it a pleasanter world. . . .” (Larcom, 1889) and now they had the chance of not following their mothers’ footsteps and make their own future.

Lucy Larcomworked in textile factory along with New Hampshire girls, who had been working in mills for much longer than her. The effects of their work in the factories are shown in their character, as it becamestronger because of the settled principle of having a purpose in life. Lucy Larcom describes the New Hampshire girls that worked with her as interesting and active.
